Purple heart with Pamela Butler's Picture

Born:  March 13, 1989
Died:  October 15, 1999

On Tuesday, October 12, 1999, at approximately 5:45 PM, Pamela Butler was kidnapped on the street in front of her home in Kansas City, Kansas.  A man who was a stranger to Pamela and her family grabbed Pamela and threw her in his white pickup truck.  On Thursday, October 14, 1999, the suspect, Keith D.  Nelson, was captured on the south banks of the Kansas River in Kansas City, Kansas.  Pamela's body was found in a shallow grave near a church in Grain Valley, Missouri, on Friday, October 15, 1999.

For three days and three nights, the greater Kansas City as well as the rest of country, prayed for the safe return of Pamela to her family.  Unfortunately, that did not happen.  There was a steady stream of visitors to Pamela's home.  Her mother, Cherri West, in spite of the difficult situattion, kept her composure.

I can remember the night Pamela Butler was abducted.  During the 9:00 PM newscast, one of the news anchor said that an Amber Alert had been issued for a ten year old girl.  That ten year old girl was Pamela Butler.  I can remember being at work when Pamela's body was discovered.  One of my co-workers within earshot announced that Pamela's body had been found in the shallow grave.

Pamela's favorite color was purple.  At the elementary school she attended, there is a garden that has been dedicated in Pamela's name.  It is called "Pam's Garden" and it contains a purple bench and flowers.
