A Tribute to my Parents

I wrote the following tribute to my parents on my birthday in June 1997.  This tribute appeared in two forums on DELPHI as well as a listserv for individuals and families dealing with cleft lip and/or palate and/or other craniofacial anomalies.

Dear Mom and Dad,

Thirty-three years ago today. I came into the world.  When I came into the world, I came with craniofacial anomalies, disabilities, and a very uncertain future.  There were a lot of unknowns with me.

The shock and horror you must have felt when I was born quickly gave way to love and support.  You knew that I needed help.  The morning after I was born, the plastic surgeon came into the room and told you that he could help me.  You believed him.  After all, he was part of our lives for twenty-nine years.  We've gone down the road with three great plastic surgeons.

Through the years, the three of us have overcome many obstacles.  Some of them that stand out: the misdiagnosis of mental retardation at two-and-a-half and all the surgeries.  (Just think we are almost thru the surgeries!!)

Through the years, the three of us have celebrated many triumphs.  Some of them include: the accomplishments in school.  The triumphs have been the best part. :-)

I must not forget my brothers: David, Scott, and Mark and their families, because they are very much a part of my life too.

We've all shared thirty-three years of happiness and sorrows.  But most of all, there's been the happiness.

I can't think of two people I would want to have as parents but you.

Although I show my love and happiness for you in many ways, I never say the following enough:

I LOVE YOU, MOM AND DAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know what I would do without you two in my life.

Thank you for helping me with all you do!!

Thank you for giving me life!!

I hope that we can celebrate my birthday together for many years to come.

Love & Hugs,
Kristi
